Dr. Georgios Matis
Dr. Georgios K. Matis, MD, MSc, PhD, is the Director of the Department of Surgical Management of Chronic Pain and Spasticity / Neuromodulation at Hygeia Hospital in Athens since September 2025. An internationally recognized neurosurgeon, he specializes in functional neurosurgery and minimally invasive treatments for chronic pain and spasticity.
His extensive training includes leading centers in Greece (University General Hospital of Alexandroupolis, “G. Papanikolaou” General Hospital of Thessaloniki, 417 Military Hospital of Athens), the USA (Weill Cornell Medical College, New York), Switzerland (University Hospital of Zurich), and Germany (University Hospital of Cologne, Department of Stereotactic & Functional Neurosurgery).
Before joining Hygeia Hospital, he led for several years the Department of Chronic Pain and Spasticity at the University Hospital of Cologne.
Dr. Matis holds the “Specialized Neurosurgical Pain Therapy” certification from the German Neurosurgical Academy (NCA) and is a board-certified neurosurgeon in Greece, Cyprus, Germany, and Switzerland. He currently serves as Secretary of the German Neuromodulation Society (DGNM) and is an active member of several prestigious international scientific societies, including the International Neuromodulation Society (INS), the Canadian Neuromodulation Society (CNS), the Middle Eastern Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, the DGNC, the Swiss Spine Society, the ISPN, the IPSIS, and the Vagus Nerve Society.
In addition, he is Co-Chair of the Medical and Public Education Committee of the INS, a member of the Editorial Board of Neuromodulation: Technology at the Neural Interface, Co-Section Editor of Pain Practice, and Editor-in-Chief of The Internet Journal of Neurosurgery.
With an extensive record of research and publications in both Greek and international journals, Dr. Matis has participated in numerous international clinical programs and has been invited as a speaker at global conferences across five continents.
He is also highly active on social media, promoting awareness and education in neuromodulation, spinal cord stimulation, intrathecal therapies, and innovative minimally invasive solutions for chronic pain.
